The Braxton Kooser Memorial Scholarship
The Braxton Kooser Memorial Scholarship is open to all graduating Derby High School seniors who plan to attend Kansas State University and embody the character traits and work ethic of Braxton Kooser. Honoring Braxton Kooser
This Memorial Scholarship has been established to honor an outstanding young man, Braxton Wells Kooser. Braxton was a Derby Panther, only in his second semester of his freshman year, when he was tragically killed in a car accident at the age of 14. Along with being a Derby Panther (football player), Braxton was a beloved son, adored brother, faithful Christian, Derby Tiger (baseball), trusted friend and a Kansas State Wildcat through and through. Braxton’s loyalty to his family, his friends, his faith, his school and his teammates were unmatched. We want to honor this young man by choosing a recipient that displays some of the same character traits and attributes that Braxton displayed; faith, integrity, dedication, teamwork, commitment and perseverance.
Student Eligibility
The Braxton Kooser Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a Derby High School graduating senior who plans to attend Kansas State University. The student must also have a high school grade point average of 3.0 (or higher) and must have participated in Derby High School athletics.
Scholarship Application & Process
Applicants will need to complete the application form. In addition to the application, the students will be asked to submit an essay entitled, ‘The biggest challenge I’ve had to overcome in my life’ and a certified copy of the most recent high school transcript. The applications and essays will be reviewed by the selection committee. The selection committee will consist of the family of Braxton Kooser and at least one non-family member of the family’s choosing.
Scholarship Awarded
The Braxton Kooser Memorial Scholarship will be announced during the annual awards program at Derby High School in the spring of the year. If there are no qualified applicants for a given year, two scholarships may be given the following year or the committee can decide to increase the scholarship given to the recipient that year. The Derby Community Foundation will administer the fund, awarding the scholarship check(s) each year. The scholarship amount of $300 and will be sent directly to Kansas State University.
